Broken Fillings
|
• | Contact our Office: Whether it is during office hours, or outside of office hours, contact our office for further guidance and to schedule an appointment to have your filling repaired. Let us know if you are feeling discomfort or pain. We can offer some guidance for what to do to reduce discomfort and protect the exposed tooth from damage. |
• | Save Pieces: If possible, save your broken filling. Lost crowns, inlays and onlays, and more may be able to be restored. |
• | Clean the Area: A missing or broken filling can mean that the tooth is now exposed to bacteria. To combat this, we recommend gargling with warm salt water to remove any debris. Simply mix ½ tsp of salt in a cup of warm water, gargle, and spit. Additionally, be sure to clean the area during your regular brushing routine and avoid chewing with that tooth when possible. |
• | Temporary Fill: If you are in pain, and unable to be seen immediately, there are temporary solutions that can help. Local drugstores carry a temporary tooth filler that you can use until you can be seen. Simply clean the area well, then place the temporary dental putty-like material. |
• | Chewing vigorously on something crunchy, or on a non-food item. |
• | Continued decay of the tooth |
• | Conditions such as bruxism which is the gnashing or grinding of teeth |
• | Trauma to the tooth or root |
• | Bonding material losing its bonding due to a chemical reaction |
• | Age - dental fillings do have a lifespan and need to be occasionally refreshed |
