Veneers

In just two or three dental visits, a veneer can improve the color, shape and function of the teeth resulting in a more
natural and young looking smile. Special thin  porcelain laminates, called veneers, can also be used to correct
discolored, worn down, cracked and chipped teeth. Veneers can also be used to close unsightly gaps between teeth.
Veneers are porcelain restorations that are bonded to the teeth. Because teeth have to be altered (shaped) in
order to accommodate the final veneers, this procedure is considered as irreversible.

The process involves removing an thin layer of the tooth (the amount of tooth removal depends on an individual
basis) to allow for the thickness of the veneer.  Then an impression (mold) is taken of the tooth and sent to a special
lab. At the end of the first appointment temporary veneers are placed on the teeth.  At the second appointment
the final bonding of the veneers to the tooth occurs.  Before the final cementation, the patient has the chance to
try the veneers on and approve them.

Crowns/Bridges

Crowns are usually made of a material like porcelain, covering the tooth completely. They are typically used to
restore a tooth’s function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a
tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore
the tooth. Crowns are also used to attach bridges, cover implants, prevent a cracked tooth from braking, or an
existing filling that is too large and will brake in the near feature. Crowns also serve a cosmetic use when made for
the anterior teeth in cases where the teeth are discolored or need to be returned to the natural shape and form..

Procedure

A tooth must usually be prepared by the dentist (reduced in size) in order to accommodate a crown. An impression
(a mold) is taken of the prepared tooth and then impression is sent to a special lab, which manufactures a custom-
designed crown. A temporary crown is placed on the prepared tooth until the permanent crown is ready (usually
taking about two weeks). Permanent crowns are then cemented in place.

Implants

Before development of dental implants, dentures, partial dentures and fixed bridges were the only alternative to
replacing a missing tooth or teeth. Implants are titanium structures that are placed in the area of a missing tooth.
Implants are anchored to the jawbone and act as a foundation (equivalent to a natural tooth structure) for a
permanent single crown or bridge. In some cases, implants can be used to attach dentures. Implants are so well-
designed, they mimic the look and feel of natural teeth.

Dental implants require strict oral hygiene and in general patients can expect a high success rates with the procedure.

Multiple teeth replaced with implants
•        Full replacement of upper teeth: The upper set of teeth is replaced with  individual implants.
•        Full replacement of lower teeth: The lower set of teeth is replaced with implants. Full lower replacement
usually only uses six implants (near the front), which are used to anchor a denture. This provides a very stable
denture in comparison with a regular denture.
Single tooth replacement with implant

Steps for this procedure:

•        The missing tooth is replaced with an implant by the surgeon, which is covered by gum tissue at the end of
surgery.
•        A period of four to six months is needed in order for the implant to properly heal.
•        The implant is then uncovered and an implant extension is attached.
•        The new crown is cemented on top of the implant extension.
